What Is This Networking Thing & Why Do I Need To Do It?

Quite simply the more people you know (or rather the more people that know you) the easier life will become.  Networking sometimes gets a bad rap, I have often heard, why should I go to a networking event it is just a room full of people trying to sell me something.   While this can sometimes be true if your business it to grow having a large network in indispensable.

I prefer to look at networking as building connections and I'm all about being connected.  When you take this approach and stop trying to sell but rather to learn about other people and their business and how you can help then, you become a connection for them.  The more connections you have the more doors that open.

Networking Tip # 1 - Business Cards

Business Cards - How not to forget them

This tip comes from my good friend and quite possibly the best networked/connected person in Halifax, Matt Whitman.  Have you ever been in a situation where you wish that you had you business cards but left them in your other jacket?  Well try this and I guarantee that you will find it pretty hard to ever forget them again.  Choose a good friend or colleague and have a standing bet with them that every time they see you, they must ask if you have your business cards and if you don't then you owe them $50.00.  I'll bet that you'll never go anywhere without those cards again.
